From my continued Adventures in Weeding, I submit this badass author photo. Something in the combination of the stern turned head, the tweed coat and black frame glasses says that he’s a anthropological folklorist not to be messed with. The book, Folklore and Society, also contains the memorable chapter title “The Bawdy Ballads of Ontario.”
Edited to add that the subject of this photograph, B.A. Botkin, was actually something of a badass — his work documenting the folk stories of freed slaves and other disenfranchised Americans earned him the scrutiny of the FBI.
