Something in the combination of the stern turned head, the tweed coat and black frame glasses says that he’s a anthropological folklorist not to be messed with. The book, Folklore and Society, also contains the memorable chapter title “The Bawdy Ballads of Ontario.” ~~~ Edited to add that the subject of this photograph, B.A. Botkin, was actually something of a badass — his work documenting the folk stories of freed slaves and other disenfranchised Americans earned him the scrutiny of the FBI.
