We got through our first rendition of “Be Like Hammer, Not Like Ice: Academic Integrity in Higher Education” for first-year college students.
Hot tip: if you have to do a presentation on an inherently dull subject like “academic integrity,” do what we did:
- give out lots of candy;
- use funny and random (creative commons-licensed) photos like this one;
- incorporate significant use of video, including featured segments on Vanilla Ice (example of insufficient citation) and Milli Vanilli (example of ghost-writing).
Fellow librarians: message me if you’re interested in seeing the complete slideshow and lesson plan.
The session went great today — the students laughed and participated, and in the end when we broke them into groups and asked them to develop their own tips and advice for avoiding problems, they came up with some good ideas.
We perform it twice more tomorrow!
