Hey bookslingers, tumblarians, twitterbrarians, assorted MLIS students, and other information professionals: do you live in the Bay Area? Can you arrive in San Francisco’s Mission District between 6:00pm and 7:00pm tomorrow night, May 25?

The Information Amateurs Social Club is organizing a northward crawl of the Mission in search of cocktails, tacos, ice cream and anything else this thriving neighborhood has to offer. We’ll gather at the starting point — Iron & Gold — at 6:00, and once an hour has passed we’ll start the march.

Come on out and join us. Strangers are welcome. I look like this guy, minus the beard. Let me know you’re coming, and I’ll message you my number so you can find us if we’re walking.

RSVP via Facebook or DM me on tumblr »>

Boost!

And boo for not getting to play too.

Seriously, the librarian culture in the US fascinates me. I’m going to sneak into some libraries while I’m there in the summer *stupid grin*

I’m curious if the librarian culture you’re referring to is the one that will engage in a pub crawl in an energetic urban neighborhood, or the one that takes part in parades like the one in the photo.

Of course, there’s a bit of crossover. If those ladies asked me to join their parade, I’d do it in a heartbeat.

You won’t have to sneak into a public library, though — that’s the thing — they are open to the public.

Random thought, after reading the Librarian in Black’s post on dressing true to yourself as a...

Random thought, after reading the Librarian in Black’s post on dressing true to yourself as a library professional: given my own monochromatic wardrobe, I could easily have named my blog “The Librarian in Brown.”

"Above all, stay true to who you are. I am 2 classes away from finishing library school and just finished my user education course. Are there any blogs, books, listservs etc. that you would suggest to keep up with the latest teaching methods/tools/trends? Thanks!

I wish I had suggestions!

Every once I see something good pop up on a blog, but there aren’t any I regularly follow that are specifically on the subject. Most of what I learn in terms of instruction is a mix of conferences, professional workshops, and my really awesome instructional partner here at MPOW.

The best thing might be to find a mentor in your area who is an instructional librarian — hopefully they can give you inspiring ideas, and also point you to good sources of new inspiration.

They served as the backdrop for each slide (with their opacity limited to 30% to make the text readable). I rotated in about ten different maps.

All of them come from an atlas drawn by Piri Reis, an admiral in the Ottoman Turk navy, and scanned and placed in the public domain by the Walters Art Museum in Baltimore, Maryland. Not only do they host these images on their website, they have a prominent “download” button on each scanned digital object.

You know, it’s just a life-size X-Wing built entirely with...

You know, it’s just a life-size X-Wing built entirely with Lego. I've been researching about his first wife, 'Abbey Perkins', 'Abigail Perkins Cheney' and found no information about her 'leaving to form a sex cult.' Thanks I'm a Information Management student, but library history is exciting.

Hello!

The dissolution of John and Abigail’s marriage was due to her increasing occult activities, which including sexual behavior with other members of her circle of followers. He wrote about it in the first draft of his unpublished autobiography, which is in the Library of Congress’s John Vance Cheney papers (MSS16651) in Washington, DC.

Cheney found it so shocking and upsetting that he redacted that portion of his manuscript in his subsequent drafts.

When I was researching Cheney for a potential thesis in 2009, I went to the Library of Congress and looked through their holdings. That’s when I read his autobiography, which to my knowledge is not available in digital form…except on my hard drive. I scanned his complete autobiography while I was there.

If this would be useful in your research, I can share it (it is long since been in the public domain). Feel free to message me your email address if you are interested.

Nicole Branch, my instructional partner, and I have been asked to present to an annual conference of our university faculty. Our topic is curriculum mapping, and the main example we’ll use to demonstrate the power of this tool is our own, in-house information literacy program.

When we started shaping this program, our instructional opportunities were limited to occasional one-shot, 50 or 75 minute demonstrations of resources to a class full of students. As we started to present to more and more classes, we realized we needed to map our program to both our learning outcomes and the university’s required courses to ensure students would be building on skills through each workshop instead of seeing the same demonstration repeated ad nauseum.

Originally, we mapped that all out on excel spreadsheets. Now that we are presenting it to faculty, we wanted to give it a little more style. This visual representation is the result, with inspiration derived from Char Booth’s Claremont Colleges curriculum map.

The thumbnail images in three of the identified lesson plans are drawn from those presentations we do. Two of the thumbnail images come from Wikimedia Commons; one was available through Creative Commons license from Flickr user mandiberg.

Stella opening up a mussel.

Stella opening up a mussel.

The deal was if we came over and made sangria, my mom would make...

The deal was if we came over and made sangria, my mom would make paella.

pcsweeney:

I am serving for the first time as a marshal, leading undergraduates to the stage in my own academic attire (last year? I was a parking lot attendant).

I’m very excited to see so many students I’ve worked with reach this milestone.

Out to dinner on Mother’s Day.

Out to dinner on Mother’s Day.

So Patrick and I were hanging out in this bar and we met this...

So Patrick and I were hanging out in this bar and we met this chick named Kate and she totally wants to be a librarian.

My wife might really regret telling me to kill time in the record store waiting for us to meet up.

My wife might really regret telling me to kill time in the record store waiting for us to meet up.
